Travel professional Mohamed Bassam Adam has been appointed Deputy Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The appointment has come as part of ongoing changes in the Maldivian Tourism Ministry that began after the change of government subsequent to recent elections that saw opposition leader Mohamed Muizzu defeat incumbent President Ibrahim Solih.

“As the Deputy Managing Director of MMPRC, my vision for Visit Maldives is to deepen and expand our engagement with the Indian market. Currently, India ranks as our top source market by volume, a testament to the strong appeal of the Maldives as a preferred destination for Indian travellers. The next step in our strategic journey is to elevate this success and make India the top market in terms of revenue as well,” Adam tells India Outbound.

“To achieve this, we are focusing on several key areas. While maintaining our reputation as a luxury destination, we are also showcasing the Maldives as a hub for diverse experiences, including culture, adventure and eco-tourism. This approach aims to attract a broader spectrum of Indian travellers, including high-end tourists. Understanding the varied preferences of Indian travellers is crucial. We will develop customised marketing campaigns that resonate with different segments, from families and honeymooners to adventure and wellness enthusiasts. Building robust partnerships with Indian travel agencies, airlines, and influencers will be key. These collaborations can facilitate more high-value package deals and promotions tailored to affluent Indian travellers,” Adam adds.

According to a press statement, Bassam’s strategic consultancy services have been instrumental in enhancing the operations and market presence of numerous successful travel companies, both locally and internationally.

The statement adds that leveraging his background spanning from ticketing to hotel bookings, Bassam brings over 20 years of expertise and track record of fostering industry growth and success. It says that Bassam’s role as a representative of publications like Asian Diver and Petit Futé has positioned the Maldives as a premier diving and travel destination.

According to the statement, his appointment as Deputy Managing Director at MMPRC signifies a strategic move to highlight his experience in steering the corporation towards continued growth and prominence within the tourism industry.

“Leveraging digital platforms popular in India will help us engage potential high-spending tourists. A strong digital presence, including targeted social media campaigns, will be instrumental in reaching this audience. There’s a growing trend among Indian travellers towards sustainable and responsible tourism. By promoting eco-friendly resorts and experiences, we can appeal to the environmentally conscious and luxury-focused segments simultaneously. By implementing these strategies, we aim to not only retain India as our top source market by volume but also significantly increase its contribution to our revenue. This approach will ensure a more sustainable, profitable, and mutually beneficial relationship between the Maldives and Indian travellers,’’ says Bassam.

His educational foundation includes an Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management, the statement adds. Bassam’s influence within the sector extends through various capacities, notably as a Board Member of the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO), where he has actively shaped industry policies and advocated for the interests of travel agents and tour operators.

“At MMPRC, our collaborative vision for growth and excellence is shaped by a talented and dedicated management team. Our CEO/ Managing Director, Fathmath Thaufeeq, stands at the helm with her impressive vision and exceptional management skills, fostering a motivating and hospitable work environment that resonates with our industry’s values. Her expertise in corporate governance and strategic restructuring is instrumental in driving our mission forward. Alongside her, we have two Deputy Managing Directors, each bringing a unique set of skills and perspectives. Zihuny Rasheed, with extensive knowledge in marketing and public relations, plays a crucial role in shaping our marketing strategies and outreach. I, Mohamed Bassam Adam, am honored to serve as the other Deputy Managing Director, contributing my own insights and experience to complement the strengths of our team,” says Bassam.

“Under the visionary leadership of President Mohamed Muizzu and with guidance from Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal, we are committed to working closely with industry stakeholders including hotels, resorts, guesthouses, and liveaboards . Our goal is to foster strong partnerships and drive MMPRC to new heights of success and innovation,” he adds.
