The Saudi government agency Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has announced that it will host the inaugural AlUla World Archaeology Summit, which will gather international leaders from the fields of archaeology, cultural heritage, media, innovation, entrepreneurship and more.

In a press statement, RCU says that the summit, to be held from September 13–15 at Maraya in AlUla, in Saudi Arabia, will feature panel discussions centred on advancing the field of archaeology at a global scale, contributing to further discovery and innovation worldwide.

The statement says that the AlUla World Archaeology Summit is aligned to serve the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. It says that the summit aims to positively impact humanity through insights gained from both cultural heritage and advancements in science. The event in AlUla will coincide with Saudi Arabia hosting the 45th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting from September 10-25 in Riyadh, adds the statement.

Beyond scholarly discourse, RCU says that the summit will provide a global platform for collaboration with wider audiences on archaeology. More than 60 speakers from diverse professional backgrounds will attend the event to talk about archaeological relevance to global issues, co-creating visionary, heritage-based solutions to contemporary issues across sectors and vice versa, it adds.

Abdulrahman Alsuhaibani

“The AlUla World Archaeology Summit will foster an environment of cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. Inspired by humanity’s shared past, we will focus on innovative solutions that can have a long-lasting impact on the world. We’re excited to host the inaugural Summit in AlUla, where the world came to meet, and where we will meet again,’’ says Abdulrahman Alsuhaibani, Executive Director of Archaeology, Conservation and Collections at RCU.

According to the statement, the main programme will focus on four key themes, including identity, resilience, ruinscapes and accessibility. Both Saudi and international archaeology students and young professionals can join the parallel ‘Future Forum’, says the statement, providing a platform to engage and contribute to important conversations in the fields of archaeology and cultural heritage.
