Tourism to the Caribbean island destination of Dominican Republic has been thriving despite recent challenges and was by far the best performing sector of the country’s economy.

These are the findings of the Hotel and Tourism Association of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores). In a press statement, the tourism industry organisation says that the tourism industry was the most dynamic part of the Dominican Republic’s economy, experiencing a 10.7 pc growth from the previous year and contributing USD 9.7 billion to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The overall travel and tourism scenario in Dominican Republic was outlined by David Llibre, President, Asonahores during the 24th annual Marketing of Dominican Tourism Products Fair (DATE) held in the capital Santo Domingo recently.

“These figures have an impact, not only on tourism projects and on the different actors in the sector, but also on an entire society that directly and indirectly benefits from the productive chain generated by the sector,” Llibre told the gathering.

Llibre also announced a record in foreign direct investment with USD 1.82 billion, an increase of 12 pc, and a representation of 27 pc of total foreign direct investment registered by the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic.

In addition, Llibre cited the expanded relationship between Asonahores and the Ministry of Tourism, the impact of DATE and the commitment from the Civil Aviation Board to further several major tourism projects.

On the occasion, Gabriel Escarrer, CEO, Meliá Hotels International, underscored the chain’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.

Escarrer commended Asonahores for their unwavering dedication to organizing this pivotal event, essential for showcasing the Dominican tourism product and its diverse offerings. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to host the event at the newly renovated Paradisus Palma Real, highlighting Meliá’s ongoing support for the collective success of the tourism sector.

Highlighting Meliá’s luxury strategy, Escarrer emphasised the paradigmatic role of Punta Cana as a premier destination, boasting a diverse portfolio of exceptional hotels catering to various customer segments. He showcased the Paradisus Palma Real’s recent $50 million renovation, positioning it as a hub for prestigious events such as DATE and the 2023 World Tourism Organisation assembly.

In line with Punta Cana’s emergence as a hub for experiential tourism, Paradisus Palma Real has also hosted gastronomic events featuring renowned chefs under the “The Epicure” Programme. This initiative aims to elevate Dominican and international gastronomy, showcasing high-level culinary experiences at restaurants like Mascalzone and Flora by Leandro Diaz.

Escarrer also highlighted Meliá Caribe Beach as a leading family-friendly destination and Meliá Punta Cana Beach’s innovative “Wellness Inclusive” concept catering to the wellness travel segment. Furthermore, he outlined the rebranding of Paradisus Grand Cana and announced upcoming projects like the ZEL Punta Cana hotel and the reconstruction of Paradisus Punta Cana, reflecting Meliá’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
