Tanzania sees 25.7 pc year-on-year increase in arrivals in Jan-Aug 2023

Tourism sector in Tanzania is fast growing & is among major sources of foreign exchange in the country

Boosted by arrivals from its largest source market outside Africa, the United States of America, Tanzania is witnessing a resurgence in tourism with over 1.13 million international arrivals in the first eight months of the year, a 25.7 pc rise from the year-ago period.

International tourist arrivals in the East African country of Tanzania in the period of January to August 2023, increased to over 1.13 million people, compared to 900,182 entered in the country during the corresponding period in 2022.

According to a press statement by Tanzanian National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), this represents an increase of 231,104 visitors, equivalent to 25.7 pc from the year-ago period. The statement adds that the tourism sector in Tanzania is fast growing and is among major sources of foreign exchange in the country.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Tanzania, is responsible for the compilation and dissemination of socio-economic statistics. It says that the number of international arrivals entering the country upto August 2023 through Zanzibar were 336,203 arrivals, equivalent to 29.7 pc of the total arrivals.

The statement adds that total international arrivals for August 2023 increased to 186,030 compared to 158,049 arrivals recorded in the corresponding period in 2022, equivalent to an increase of 17.7 pc. 

International arrivals from outside Africa

According to the data, during the period of January to August 2023, majority of arrivals came from the United States of America with 84,541 visitors, followed by France at 72,009, Germany at 57,798, United Kingdom at 51,505 and 51,056 from Italy. Meanwhile, for the month of August 2023, the majority of arrivals came from Italy (14,986), United States of America (14,416), France (11,997), United Kingdom (9,852) and Germany (9,161).

International arrivals from Africa

During the period under review, the majority of arrivals from Africa as source market during, came from Kenya with 128,753, followed by Burundi (69,505), Zambia (38,394), Rwanda (37,269) and Uganda (28,594). For the month of August 2023, the majority of arrivals were mainly from the same source markets with Kenya recording 18,550 visitors, followed by Burundi (12,310), Zambia (6,649), Rwanda (5,124) and Uganda (4,052).
