Tourists and residents in Berlin are now able to visit 60 museums in the city on first Sunday of every month, Berlin’s Culture Senator has announced.

Culture Senator Joe Chialo (CDU) has confirmed the extension of the admission-free scheme and ensured the funding for the scheme for the upcoming two years, making cultural exploration accessible to locals and tourists alike.

According to a press statement, popular museums such as the Altes Museum, Gemäldegalerie and Pergamon Museum, as well as smaller gems like the Werkbundarchiv, Decorative Arts Museum, and Knoblauchhaus Museum, are all included in the list of museums that can be visited.

The statement adds that the diverse array of options is sure to appeal to everyone, history enthusiasts, art lovers or those looking to discover hidden treasures.

“There is a lot to discover at our museums, with exhibitions and events on topics such as art, design, religion, history, nature, everyday culture, the history of the city, and technology. On Berlin’s Museum Sunday, there is something for everyone. We look forward to your visit,” says Sunday Museum

The statement adds that in 2023, Museum Sunday drew an impressive 750,000 visitors, marking a substantial 35 pc increase from the previous year. It says that while the opportunity to explore these museums for free is undoubtedly exciting, planning is key to guaranteeing a visit to the most popular locations.

For venues such as the Altes Museum, Gemäldegalerie and Pergamon Museum, visitors are required to secure a ticket and timeslot online. These slots become available one week in advance of each Museum Sunday, and they tend to fill up quickly.

Many other museums welcome visitors without having to reserve prior to the visit. The statement adds that this flexibility encourages exploration and allows individuals to decide on the day where they would like to spend their afternoon.

The statement adds that those eager to begin their museum adventures in 2024, the next Sunday Museum will take place on February 4. In addition, the upcoming dates for Sunday Museum in 2024 are as follows:

February 4, March 3, April 7, May 5, June 2, July 7, August 4, September 1, October 6, November 3, December 1.
