World’s second largest hotel group Accor has announced a new partnership with Trip.com, the largest tour operator in China, enabling guests at properties in Greater China to reduce their carbon impact through a series of eco-friendly initiatives.

In a press statement, the Paris-based hotel company says that customers booking stays through the Trip.com app can now select a new option on the booking page, which will see a number of sustainable practices implemented during their stay.

These include towels and bed sheets not being replaced on a daily basis, room temperatures being adjusted, and light usage being monitored while guests are out.

The statement adds that customers opting in will receive confirmation of their reduced carbon pledge, and details of the actions being taken on their behalf by the hotel.

Accor says that the new service had been inspired by a white paper published by Accor, Trip.com and consultancy company McKinsey last year, which showed that Chinese travellers were open to travelling more sustainably “if they have the support and tools to do so”.

“Accor is proud to lead the way in sustainable hospitality with another step forward that will create awareness, engage travellers in making healthier choices, and have a lasting impact on how people travel throughout Greater China. Reducing carbon emissions as well as achieving transformational and sustainable change cannot be accomplished by one company alone. It takes a concerted effort of bringing many industry players together to achieve and a greater outcome of reducing carbon emissions in China and around the world,” says Gary Rosen, CEO, Accor Greater China.

Last year Accor announced a commitment for third-party eco-certification of its Chinese portfolio of hotels with China Hospitality Association’s Green Hotel Certification.
