Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) head office in Bangkok hosted the “Delightful Colours of the River, Loi Krathong Celebrations 2020” in Ayutthaya, Bangkok and five unique destinations – Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Tak, Samut Songkhram and Roi Et – in line with the new normal practices.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand New Delhi office along with Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi celebrated the festival at Radisson Blu Delhi Airport hotel.

Loi Krathong is one of the Kingdom’s most impressive cultural events, which has been held annually on the full moon night of the 12th lunar month as a way of thanking the Goddess of the River, worshipping the Buddha, and releasing worries and bad fortune into the water. The word “loy” means to float, while “krathongs” are small baskets traditionally made from banana tree wood and carefully folded banana leaves, each containing sticks of incense, candles, and an offering of a few coins. On the night of the full moon, Thais launch their krathong on a river, canal, or a pond, making a wish as they do so.

The full moon night of the 12th lunar month this year fell on October 31.

Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor said, “This year, the Loi Krathong celebrations is being held in line with the Ministry of Public Health’s COVID-19 control measures and the Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) standard to ensure visitor confidence.”

Vachirachai Sirisumpan, Director, Tourism Authority of Thailand in charge of Nepal, Bhutan, East & Northeast India and Bangladesh markets said, “In these tough times we are very grateful to be able to celebrate the Loy Krathong festival in a small way and pay respect to our Thai festivities, as we pray for better times ahead and wellbeing of everyone.”
