The Maldives government led by newly-elected President Mohamed Muizzu has suspended three ministers for their allegedly “derogatory remarks” about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that triggered a meltdown on social media, with several celebrities and travel professionals roundly criticising the statements by the ministers, with some calling for a boycott of the archipelago that has emerged as one of the top destinations from India since the pandemic.
In an attempt to cool the tensions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maldives, has said that the views expressed were personal and did not represent the collective sentiment of the Maldives. “The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives,” says the statement by the ministry.
“The Government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners. Moreover, the relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks,” says Maldives MFA.
