Though Artificial Intelligence is being increasingly used by businesses around the world, the events organisation industry has been slower in uptake of this technology due to several challenges that come with the use of AI.

These are some of the key findings of a recent survey conducted by Ovation Global DMC about the use of AI in the events industry worldwide.

According to a press statement, some of the key challenges that event professionals face when considering the implementation of AI include a lack of expertise and understanding about AI, followed by fears of losing the human touch, concerns about cost, and doubts regarding attendee acceptance.

The statement adds that even though the events industry is at the forefront of technological advancements, the survey has shed light on the awareness and implementation of AI in event planning and management.

The survey, which involved 591 event planners and suppliers, revealed that 51 pc of respondents were aware of the potential that AI holds in revolutionising the events industry. However, only 12 pc have actively implemented AI into their event planning or management processes, showcasing a significant gap between awareness and adoption.

The survey adds that as many as 33 pc of respondents expressed a strong interest in using AI to create marketing plans and outbound marketing materials, while 21 pc of respondents are eager to employ AI for streamlined event planning and logistics. AI-powered tools can significantly enhance efficiency in organizing events and managing intricate logistics, ultimately leading to cost savings.

The survey report adds that 15 pc of respondents hope to utilise AI for data analysis, enabling them to gain valuable insights into attendee preferences and behaviours, but only 9 pc of respondents have harnessed AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants to improve attendee engagement, provide real-time assistance, and manage event inquiries and even lesser, 8 pc use AI to curate presentation and event content, ensuring that sessions and speakers align with attendees’ interests.

However, despite the current underutilisation of AI, there is optimism regarding its future in the events industry. The report says that 70 pc of the respondents believe that AI will be predominantly present in larger events or specific segments, indicating that AI could become a staple in certain areas of the industry.

Moreover, 60 pc of respondents anticipate that AI will supplement and reduce traditional job roles in the event industry, reshaping the way events are planned and managed.

“With the correct approach we believe that AI has the power to enhance efficiency and attendee experience,” says Rutger Hoorn, VP of Sales & Strategic Partnerships at Ovation Global DMC.
