Madrid, the capital of Spain, has been awarded the ‘Best European Meeting Tourism Destination’ among Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2023 in the 13th edition of the World Travel Awards Europe. The title comes to Madrid for the sixth consecutive year.

In a press statement, the Madrid City Council says this award demonstrates the confidence of professionals in the tourism sector in Madrid, which once again has surpassed cities such as Copenhagen, Paris, Vienna, Barcelona, Amsterdam or Berlin.

It adds that the award confirms the reputation obtained by Madrid in this tourism segment, despite the challenges that the entire tourism industry has had to face. It adds that this recognition had earned EUR 1.7 billion last year.

The board says Madrid will now also be able to revalidate its title as the best meeting tourism destination in the world, which it has held for four years, at the grand final gala of the World Travel Awards that will take place in the coming months. In it, the capital will compete against the winning destinations from the rest of the regional competitions for the awards, such as the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Indian Ocean and North America and the Caribbean.

The board says that achieving this recognition has been a joint effort by both, the City Council, through the Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB) and by the public and private agents that are part of the Madrid meetings industry.

The statement adds that the Madrid Convention Bureau has encouraged this public-private collaboration and represented more than 220 Madrid companies from all business sectors dependent on meeting tourism. Its objective is to continue cultivating Madrid’s international leadership in this area.

The statement adds that the municipal body, dependent on the delegated area of tourism, is finalising its promotion plan for 2024, in which its associates will once again have a great role and visibility. This strategy will allow the Madrid destination to be disseminated in a coordinated manner in its main meeting tourism markets, such as the United States and Europe.

The board says that participation in fairs and other professional meetings is planned, in addition to carrying out actions at the destination, such as familiarisation trips or support for professional fairs. All of these initiatives will have sustainability and legacy in Madrid as their main axes to continue keeping Madrid’s meeting tourism on the front line, adds the statement.
