The last thing that I could expect from my trip to Dubai, was to find the store of my dreams there! I am not many versions of Bloomingdales brought out the shopaholic in me. Be it casual wear, formals or anything under the fashion sky, I found it all there. I would love to come back to Dubai for the love of shopping!” exclaims Ritika Goel, a fashion student based in Delhi.
Many like Goel, have had been caught by the shopping bug, while on their vacation overseas. The fascination has grown many a fold in the last decade with a shift in tourists shopping casually during the trips to trips especially being tailored for shopping purposes. “The wedding season is a particular hit for the shopping tourism sector. Indians have become more critical of what they wear, use and gift.
They wouldn’t compromise for a select range of labels available in the franchises open here, they want to explore much more options,” shares Rajkumar Rao, a travel agent based in Delhi.
Here are some of the luxury shopping destinations that are particularly popular amongst Indian travellers.
Rightly famed as the fashion capital, Milan is a dream destination for fashionistas. Home to several top label brands, cutting edge boutiques and high-end shops, Milan knows how to win the hearts of its visitors. With evergreen fashion brands including Giorgio Armani, Attico, Dolce and Gabbana, and Marta Ferri having their roots in Milan, sartorial heritage.
“It was a shopper’s paradise. Like we have shops of all sorts in Indian markets, but only much cleaner, better, and luxurious. You can find all the brands from Prada to Gucci there. Archaeological excellence completed my experience.
However, the products are really expensive from an Indian point of view. For instance, one of the bags that caught my attention cost nearly INR 300,000, an amount greater than my entire trip budget!” recollects Srishti Dhingra, a journalist from Mangalore, from her recent trip to Italy.
Some of the most visited luxury shopping getaways include Via Montenapoleone, Corso Venezia, Corso di Porta Ticinese, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Corso Buenos Aires. Located besides handsome parks, gardens, beaches and palaces, shopping here is a royal experience in itself.
Beverly Hills, California
Carrying forward the Californian spirit of style and class, the shopping destinations in the state’s Beverly Hills exude affluence. Dotted along the roads, the pretty boutiques, emporiums, bistros and mansions are set to upscale the shopping experience. One of the most talked-about luxury getaways of California is the Golden Triangle bordered by three legendary thoroughfares – Santa Monica Boulevard, Rodeo Drive and Wilshire Boulevard. Many visitors claim the place to be an open-air museum dripping class and luxury. Another such shopping avenue is the Fashion First region where numerous branded boutiques stand pretty. The place keeps its male attendees in mind as well, with several stores such as Dior Homme dedicated entirely to men’s wear.
Extending the fashion legacy to accents, accessories and novelties, Beverly Hills also puts on a platter several high-end brands such as E Braun and Co at 457 N Robertson Boulevard and Breguet boutique at 280 N Rodeo Drive. One of the stores, which is a particular hit amongst the visitors is the ‘Only Roses’ stores at the Brighton Way displays finely selected roses from across the city. The avenue also offers ‘Infinite Roses’ that remain intact throughout the year.
From shopping malls dripping of grandeur to the colourful flea markets thronged with visitors throughout the year, Moscow has something for everyone.
For signature Russian goods, the classic shopping malls such as GUM, TsUM and Detsky Mir, which are all within walking distance from each other, cannot be beaten. The luxurious shopping centres offer a wide array of commodities ranging from beautiful textiles and cutlery to top brand accessories. When it comes to fashion, children’s stores and fine dine the city is no behind. Top-notch brands such as Valentino, Emilio Pucci, Jimmy Choo and Saint Laurent are sure to blow your minds.
Flea markets such as Arbat Street and Izmailovsky, located in historic squares are also very popular with tourists. With a plethora of pocket-friendly products on display, it would not be wrong to say that the ‘shop till you drop’ mantra works wonders here.

World’s largest mall, The Dubai Mall, also stands pretty in its Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed Boulevard region, tops the list of nearly all the visitors.
“I have shopped for products for nearly INR 500,000 from Dubai, and it’s all worth it. The quality is so fine, I was overwhelmed to find such a variety. Not just the fashion products, but home décor, electricals, furniture, perfumes; you name it and they have it,” shares Anu Goel, a homemaker based in Delhi.
With a flight of fewer than three hours from most parts of India, the destination tops the international shopping preferences for the Indian tourists.
“Miami is a perfect combo of beaches, art, lip-smacking cuisines and therapeutic weather. The destination is no behind when it comes to shopping. I remember being to the Miami Design District, an experience I’ll never forget. The fashion boutiques are so pretty! You can find so many unique designs there. If you are a fashion lover, be ready to loosen your purse strings there,” says Archana Awasthi, a teacher based in Ghaziabad, near Delhi.
Miami, the beach city in Southern Florida, is another mecca for shopaholics. The city has a dotting range of luxury brands, originated in Florida as well as from across the globe. Some of the most spectacular shopping avenues include the Bal Harbour Shops standing confident across the Atlantic Ocean and the Miami Design District. While the former is known for its fourteen decades-old legacies, the latter is known for its ground-breaking art, design, architecture and culture, besides the fashion boutiques. Spot high-end fashion brands such as Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Valentino, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Balmain and Aquazzura lined up here.
