In the largest ever order in the history of commercial aviation with Airbus, India’s biggest airline, the low cost carrier IndiGo has announced a deal with a firm order for 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft at the Paris Air Show that began in the French capital on Monday.

This first-of-its-kind order is anticipated to fuel the strategic relationship between IndiGo and Airbus to ‘an unprecedented depth and breadth’, says IndiGo in a press statement.

Not only will it provide a further steady stream of deliveries between 2030 and 2035 for IndiGo, but also allow one of the fastest growing airlines in the world to continue its growth trajectory for many years to come.

With this latest order, IndiGo will have placed a staggering total of 1.330 aircraft with Airbus since its founding in 2006.

The precise ratio of A320 and A321 aircraft will be determined in due course, along with the engine choice for this order. The statement adds that the evaluation of the offers was shared and discussed with IndiGo’s Board, and consequently endorsed.

IndiGo says that the purchase agreement was signed in the presence of V Sumantran, Chairman of the Board of IndiGo, Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus, and Christian Scherer, Airbus’ Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International.

Delivering fuel efficiency, the A320neo family aircraft will also allow IndiGo to maintain its strong focus on lowering operating costs with high standards of reliability. IndiGo says that the young and fuel-efficient fleet will help the brand realise its sustainability ambitions, building on the already realised CO2 reduction of 21 pc between FY16 and FY23.

The statement adds that in addition to operating more than 300 aircraft, IndiGo has 480 aircraft on order that are yet to be delivered by the end of this decade.

With this further robust order for 500 aircraft for the years 2030–2035,  IndiGo’s order-book has almost 1,000 aircraft yet to be delivered well into the next decade. There is a variety of A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR aircraft in this IndiGo order-book.

“It is difficult to overstate the significance of IndiGo’s new historic order for 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft. An order book now of almost 1,000 aircraft well into the next decade, enables IndiGo to fulfil its mission to continue to boost economic growth, social cohesion and mobility in India. At IndiGo, we take pride in being India’s preferred airline for connectivity in and with India; and by doing so, being one of the leading airlines in the world. This order strongly reaffirms IndiGo’s belief in the growth of India, in the A320 Family and in our strategic partnership with Airbus,” says Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo.

Before the end of this decade, the Indian economy is projected to grow even further, moving from being the fifth largest in the world to the third largest. With its present aircraft fleet and the nearly 1,000 that are still to be delivered, IndiGo says that it is not only well-positioned to extend and densify its unparalleled network, but it is also expected to play its part in fully supporting and completing this mission, adds the statement.
