Seats per day at Dubai (DXB) have increased by 2 pc compared to last month, says OAG

With the global travel resuming in eagerness, traffic at many airports across the world has surpassed the 2019 levels and others are catching up fast, says OAG. Atlanta in the United States is the busiest airport in July, while Dubai in the United Arab Emirates firmly holds on to the top spot in international flights, that it first attained during the pandemic itself.

With the summer air traffic in the United States racing back to the 2019 levels, and in some places beyond, Atlanta in Georgia is the busiest airport in the world for the month of July, based on scheduled airline capacity, says UK-based global air travel data provider OAG, that has released a list of the ‘Top 10 Busiest Global Airports in the World’.

In a press statement, OAG says that the rankings are calculated based on scheduled airline capacity in the current month of July and compared to the equivalent month in 2019.

According to the survey, Atlanta (ATL) is the world’s busiest airport in July with 5.5 million seats, when calculated with both domestic and international frequency. It has 12 pc more seats than Dubai International Airport (DXB), which is the second busiest airport with 4.9 million seats. There is one more day in July compared to June, and looking at seats per day shows Atlanta and Dubai have both increased capacity by 1 pc and 2 pc respectively this month compared to last month, says OAG.

The statement adds that Tokyo Haneda (HND) continues to be the third biggest airport with 4.6 million seats and seats per day have increased by 2 pc compared to last month.

Following the compilation of domestic & international frequency, Dallas Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), London Heathrow Airport (LHR), and Istanbul Airport (IST) take up 4th, 5th and 6th rankings respectively.

OAG says that in the top 10 busiest airports Denver (DEN) has had the biggest increase in seats per day with 3 pc more compared to last month and is in 7th place. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) made it to the 8th spot while in China, Guangzhou (CAN) has moved up into the top 10 busiest airports in 9th place, trailed by Chicago O’Hare International Airport for the 10th rank.

In accordance with international frequency-only calculations, the busiest airport for international flights in July is Dubai International (DXB). With 4.9 million seats, the airport has 19 pc more international capacity than the next busiest international airport, which is London Heathrow (LHR) with 4.1 million seats. Seats per day at Dubai (DXB) have increased by 2 pc compared to last month and London Heathrow (LHR) has increased by 1 pc, says OAG.

Amsterdam (AMS), ranked in third place, has added 3 pc more seats per day compared to last month, while London Gatwick (LGW) has added the most number of seats this month. It has added 263,710 seats, which is 9 pc more seats per day than last month.

Taking the 4th place is Paris Charles de Gaulle Apt (CDG) in France, followed by Istanbul Airport (IST) in Turkiye at 5th and Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) in Germany at 6th place. Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) ranks 7th in international seat capacity.

Doha (DOH) in Qatar and Seoul Incheon (ICN) in South Korea have both added 7 pc more seats per day compared to last month and are in 8th and 9th place. London Gatwick Airport makes it to the 10th spot.
