Tourist arrivals in Taiwan drop 2 pc in August to about 663,000
5.56 million foreign visitors from January to August
Taiwan recorded 662,735 visitor arrivals in August 2026, down 2 pc year-on-year, while arrivals from India increased 8 pc to 4,418, according to the latest tourism statistics.
Visitor arrivals to Taiwan declined 1.54 pc year-on-year to 662,735 in August this year, down from 673,102 in the same month last year. The arrivals included 466,729 foreign visitors, down 0.27 pc, and 196,006 Overseas Chinese visitors, down 4.43 pc.
From January to August 2026, Taiwan recorded 5.56 million visitor arrivals, up 2 pc from 5.46 million during the same period in 2025. Monthly arrivals stood at 723,375 in January, up 11.1 pc from 651,078 in January 2025, 625,608 in February, down 10.52 pc from 699,158 in February 2025, 883,061 in March 2026, up 13.42 pc from 778,576 in March 2025, 758,613 in April, up 0.99 pc from 751,149 in April 2025, 692,784 in May, down 2.55 pc from 710,933 in May 2025, 611,148 in June, up 0.79 pc from 606,346 in June 2025, 607,534 in July 2026, up 3.63 pc from 586,226 in July.
In a press statement Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Taiwan says that the key new southbound markets, comprising Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and India, accounted for 180,116 visitors or 27.18 pc of total arrivals, up 1.64 pc year-on-year. India recorded 4,418 arrivals marking a 7.81 pc increase over August 2025.
Among the other major markets, Northeast Asia accounted for 167,555 visitors or 25.28 pc of total arrivals, down 7.19 pc. Japan recorded 116,582 visitors, down 6.57 pc, while Korea registered 50,973 visitors, down 8.57 pc.

Western and Oceanian markets recorded 88,725 visitors, up 9.88 pc year-on-year. Arrivals from the US increased 12.32 pc to 49,678, while European visitors rose 7.68 pc to 32,613. Australia and New Zealand recorded 6,434 visitors, up 3.27 pc.
Vietnam was the fastest-growing market among the Key New Southbound Markets, with arrivals rising 17.61 pc to 43,599, followed by Indonesia at 22,802 visitors, up 8.64 pc. The Philippines recorded 45,904 visitors, up 3.32 pc, while Singapore and Malaysia declined 5.32 pc and 8.32 pc respectively. Thailand recorded a 15.58 pc decline to 22,992 visitors.
Leisure was the main purpose of travel, accounting for 422,590 visitors or 63.76 pc of total arrivals, followed by business travel at 47,266 or 7.13 pc and visits to relatives at 24,652 or 3.72 pc.
Air travel accounted for 93.46 pc of total arrivals, with 619,389 visitors entering by air. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport handled 491,740 visitors or 74.2 pc of the total, followed by Kaohsiung Airport with 67,407 or 10.17 pc. The average length of stay of visitors leaving Taiwan in August was 7.68 nights.
