Portugal has launched a new rail pass for EUR 49 that allows unlimited travel in various trains in the country for a month.

Tourists visiting Portugal can now avail of a cheap monthly rail pass that allows unlimited travel by most regional trains for only EUR 49. With this move, Portugal has become the latest European country to encourage sustainable travel with a new rail pass.

According to a press statement, the EUR 49 pass can be purchased each month and carries the advantage of unlimited journeys on most of the regional trains in the country. However, the pass can’t be used on certain high-speed services like the Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, InterRegional and Internacional services.

Another condition attached to this rail pass is that the users must also purchase a Comboios de Portugal (CP) card that can be purchased for EUR 6 at the ticket office in Lisboa Oriente or Lisboa Santa Apolónia stations. The Comboios de Portugal card is a digital card on which all train tickets of Portugal can be loaded, pretty much like a regular metro card in most cities.

Besides Portugal, neighbour Spain as well as Germany and Hungary offer discounted travel passes for rail journeys, while France has put restrictions on domestic flights of less than two hours, in a bid to promote rail travel over air.
