At the ongoing Dubai International Boat Show, that is conclude on March 5, local skincare manufacturer Sunkiss has launched several packaging solutions suitable for a marine environment that do away with plastic usage entirely. In a press release, Sunkiss says that its products will exhibit its role in eliminating marine plastic waste.

Around 300 million tonnes of plastic garbage are produced each year, of which at least 14 million tonnes end up in the oceans and account for up 80 pc of all marine debris, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The fishing industry, nautical boating, and aquaculture are some of the main causes of plastic pollution in the ocean, thus posing a serious concern for the marine environment.

Sunkiss says that in order to promote sustainability, lessen plastic usage, and maximise onboard space, it has created a number of programmes in support of the local and global sailing and yachting industries. Crew and visitors can benefit from custom-made, made-to-order dispensers using SunKiss’ distinctive recyclable aluminium bottles. These dispensers offer a sustainable refill alternative while saving space and cutting down on trash onboard.

“Plastic pollution is a global issue which is impacting everyone but is becoming increasingly more problematic in the marine environment. Not only is it affecting ocean health and the health of marine species, but it also creates issues surrounding the food supply chain, impacts tourism, and contributes to climate change,’’ says Joanna Barclay, Managing Director of SunKiss.

The statement adds that SunKiss will put up its range of solutions curated in partnership with the yachting industry, seasoned hoteliers and wellness and spa experts. All these products have been designed with an aim to provide sustainable and luxury guest amenities.

The brand has also created Eco Refill, a line of toilet supplies that uses 95 pc less packaging than comparable standard-sized goods. Sunkiss has introduced sustainable turn-down presents, such as aftersun moisturiser and gel, lip balm, and hand care nutrition, the perfect cure after a day on a yacht, adds the company statement.

The fact that all goods are manufactured in the UAE further emphasises the company’s commitment to sustainability, stressed the company in its statement. As a locally developed brand in Dubai, the carbon footprint for serving regional businesses is far lower than that of contenders from Australia and the US. The formulas have been created to be alcohol- and paraben-free, vegan, and reef-friendly, making them safe and appropriate for all needs.

“At SunKiss, we are acutely aware of these issues and the need to reduce plastic usage drastically. As such, all our products are sustainably produced and have been developed to ensure that plastic usage is reduced by 90 pc. We have also worked hand-in-hand with the sailing industry to design a product line which helps further reduce waste by eliminating single-use plastics and focusing on refills,” Barclay adds.
