With effect from August 30, the Chinese government has removed the last remaining restrictions on travellers, notably inbound international tourists.

According to a press statement by the Chinese foreign ministry, China has now ended the requirement for passengers arriving from overseas to present a negative Covid-19 test result.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak in late 2019, China has been one of the countries with the tightest restrictions. These restrictions affected Chinese citizens and had the effect of severely curtailing the numbers of inbound international passengers.

Today’s easing comes nine months after China’s zero-COVID policy was lifted and four months after Chinese nationals were allowed to travel freely overseas.

By doing away with requirement for foreign tourists to present negative test results, China expects to significantly boost its own tourist arrivals and also revive the moribund tourism and hospitality industry which has only now begun to recover after a gap of well over three years.

With this removal of restrictions by China, now there are 206 countries and international territories with zero Covid-19 restrictions, up from 164 in April.
