As demand for sustainable tourism products rises around the world, a 30-year-old hospitality and jungle safari company in South Africa has become the first lodge across Africa to install a green hydrogen energy system for its power needs.
Set in Madikwe Game Reserve in North West Province of South Africa, Jaci Lodges has announced that it has taken a huge leap towards a greener and more sustainable future with the successful implementation of the next generation ‘Hydrogen In, Power Out’ (HIPO) clean energy producing system in collaboration with Elemental Energy, an energy solutions provider.
According to a press statement, the HIPO is a groundbreaking, industry-first system that utilises hydrogen as an alternative clean energy source, thus ‘‘paving the way to achieving our ultimate goal, to be completely self-sufficient on green, renewable energy’’.
It adds that Jaci’s Lodges is the first lodge in Africa to incorporate this new technology, setting the industry standard for a sustainable alternative energy source that will change the luxury African travel space forever.
The statement adds that the prototype was installed in August at Jaci’s Lodges, after months of tests, adjustments and tweaks, by the middle of this year, Jaci’s Lodges will be running on 100 pc renewable energy, using the HIPO as a hybrid power system that utilises solar power during the day and sustainably-sourced hydrogen at night.
Set in the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa’s North-West Province, Jaci’s Lodges offers guests the ideal destination for unrivalled game-viewing, unique luxury accommodation options, outstanding service and tailor-made safari activities.
Jaci and Jan van Heteren are the founders and owner-manager couple behind Jaci’s Lodges. They have spent over 30 years working together to create and sustain their dream of a wildlife and safari experience that surpasses guests’ expectations, says the statement.
