As the Caribbean island of Jamaica is set to tap the expanding potentials of heritage tourism in the region, the evergreen paradise island is also ready to showcase the Jamaican Adventure in the Caribbean with its wide-range of adventure sports for all ages at any time of the year.

Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, Edmund Bartlett stated that the growth in heritage tourism offers tremendous opportunity for Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. According to an interview with a Jamaican local newspaper, Bartlett stated that there has been a significant increase in the number of tourists who travelled just to soak in the culture and heritage of the region. He said, “Over the last decade or so, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of tourists who travel exclusively for the experience of partaking in new, exhilarating, and exotic cultures in faraway shores. According to the Caribbean Tourism Organization, the heritage tourism segment represents one of the highest-yield tourism groups, ahead of both traditional mass markets and other niche tourism audiences such as arts.”

However, in addition to this, the Jamaican Tourism Board (JTB) is ready to don an enterprising hat by means of promoting the Jamaican Adventure in the Caribbean.

Adventure in the islands

Jamaica is a year-round leisurely destination which offers a wide range of adventure activities to enthusiastic revellers, from hiking across the mountainous terrains to flying a hundred feet above the tropical rainforest or a relaxing float down the river. The premier adventure sport of the Caribbean Adventure is the ‘Chukka’, a jetpack ride touted to be Jamaica’s most enjoyed. One can actually soar through the jungle rain-forest on extreme zip-lines or step aboard a catamaran cruise for the ultimate party experience and climb the magnificent Dunn’s River Falls or simply relax on the beach-side. Swimmers can even go and snorkel a stunning reef alongside stingrays or just enjoy the original Horseback Ride ‘n’ Swim in the warm Caribbean Sea. The wanderers can even go tubing down a river or through a mysterious limestone cave. However, if one is planning to enjoy the tropical forest extensively, then they can even go for a Zip Line Canopy Tour, or the signature “Bobsled” ride from the mountain peak.

Sanjay D’costa, a software consultant from Bangalore, who recently visited the islands, shared his experience. According to him, “The islands are beautiful and if one wants to soak in the serenity of nature, there are fewer places better than Jamaica. I enjoyed rafting in Martha Brae on the famous bamboo rafts, as we made our way through the luscious forests on either side. What makes Jamaica better is that there are so many Indians and you really feel welcome here.”

Even though a Jamaican tourist visa is not required for citizens of India for a stay up to 14 days, the flight costs need to be taken into account before planning a trip to the islands. So, once one is all set with the budget, visiting the Caribbean islands sounds like a good idea for a honeymoon, a holiday or even better an adventure tour.
