Kolkata bids for Skål International World Congress 2023

Amidst uncertainty in the travel and tourism industry due to a very slow projected recovery in the next two years, with very little chance of physical trade and networking events to actually take place, Skål International is upbeat that it will host its 2021 World Congress in Quebec City, Canada. In 2022, the event is supposed to take place in the cities of Opatija and Rijeka of Croatia.

With the formation of its new executive board under the leadership of the president Carl Vaz, Skål International India has devised a new plan with consumer-focused brand identity and based on that strategy has decided to be more visible and communicative. As part of this broader plan, Skål International Kolkata – one of the 14 clubs in India, has announced an early bid to host Skål International World Congress 2023, the biggest global convention.

Skål International India comprises members across up to 42 verticals of the travel & tourism industry – including hospitality (hotels & resorts), aviation, travel agents, tour operators, OTAs, ground transport, tourism boards, marketing consultants specialising in tourism, top travel media and several stakeholders from international and local government representatives. The members are majorly owners or decision-makers at their respective companies and are heavily tilted towards outbound tourism businesses. With the blow of Covid-19, outbound tourism being completely shattered, many agents and operators are looking out for new businesses in domestic or inbound markets to survive.

“We are passing through the most difficult time and we have to help ourselves. Kolkata has never hosted a mega scale global event of tourism industry where stakeholders from all over the world assembled here. By announcing Kolkata’s bid to host the Skål World Congress in 2023, Skål International Kolkata club intends to grab the opportunity to resume international businesses,” said Sanjeev Mehra, president, Skål International Kolkata.

Skål International holds an annual World Congress each year in a different country. As the world’s largest association of travel and tourism industry professionals at decision-making levels, it gives an opportunity to all its worldwide members to discover incredible destinations and ground realities of the travel trade.

“With over 1,150 members across 14 clubs, India is one of the largest national committees in Skål International. Kolkata would be a fine venue to bring Skålleagues from across the globe together, with a focus on growing the industry in a post-Covid world,” says Carl Vaz, president, Skål International India.
