UN Tourism reaffirmed its commitment to projects funded by the Chinese government that support member states in achieving the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals
Aiming to strengthen global tourism cooperation and advance sustainable initiatives, UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili visited China for high-level meetings. Engaging with government officials, industry leaders, and development agencies, the visit focused on deepening partnerships, promoting digital transformation, and supporting economic growth.
In a press statement, UN Tourism says that the visit included engagements with senior officials, industry leaders, and development agencies, strengthening cooperation between UN Tourism and China.
It adds that during meetings with the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), the Secretary-General discussed China’s Global Development Initiative (GDI) and its role in promoting inclusive and sustainable tourism.
The statement adds that the UN Tourism reaffirmed its commitment to projects funded by the Chinese government that support member states in achieving the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
It adds that in Shanghai, Pololikashvili met with senior officials, including Chen Jining, Member of the CPC Central Committee’s Politburo and Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee. Discussions focused on sustainable tourism growth, digital transformation and investment opportunities.
UN Tourism says that it also expanded private sector collaboration with Trip.com Group, emphasising digital innovation and technology in travel.
It adds that in Hainan Province, meetings with the Governor and senior officials from the Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism addressed regional tourism development and cooperation with China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
According to UN Tourism at the Bo’ao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2025, the Secretary-General highlighted tourism’s role in economic cooperation. Further discussions with Pansy Ho, Vice Chairman of the Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF), focused on preparations for the 2025 forum and global tourism collaboration.
It adds that the visit underscored China’s role as a major player in international tourism, with UN Tourism emphasising the importance of partnerships to drive sustainable growth and economic development in the sector.
