To mark its first anniversary, Mexican heritage train Tren Maya that takes visitors on a journey through Mexican cultural and natural heritage sites has launched several tour packages.

On December 15, 2024, Tren Maya, an ambitious railway project of the Mexican government, completed one year of operations and to mark the occasion, the railway has launched a series of tour packages for travellers seeking diverse experience on the unique heritage train that showcases the best of cultural and natural heritage sites of Mexico.

The route of the Tren Maya connects five states in the southeastern region of México, covering a distance of 1,554 km and the first section of the route was inaugurated on December 15, 2023.

Tren Maya announced the launch of the campaign of Maya Train tourist packages at a press conference, where it said that the national and international tourist travel packages are being offered in conjunction with Tren Maya companies.

Tren Maya says that participating companies include Mexican companies Grupo Aeroportuario, Ferroviario, de Servicios Auxiliares y Conexos Olmeca – Maya – Mexica, the Tulum airport managing company, along with Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and airline Mexicana de Aviación.

On the occasion, Oscar David Lozano Águila, Managing Director of Tren Maya, announced that the 10 tourist packages offer a memorable and personalised experience to travellers of through the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

He added that travellers leaving the AIFA on Mexicana de Aviación will receive preferential air rates. They will also receive discounts in Tren Maya hotels in Tulum, Chichén Itzá, Calakmul and Edzná.

The packages will include departures and returns to and from AIFA, flights on Mexicana de Aviación with a 25 pc discount and flexibility to change dates and times, he said.

“They include arrival at the airports of Palenque, Campeche, Tulum, Chetumal, Mérida and Cancun in addition to Maya Train transfers with a special 50 pc discount for national tourists and preferential prices in 4-star Maya Train Hotels,” Águila said.

He provided details of two packages Jewels of Mexican Culture and Route of Wonders, saying that through these packages travellers will be able to discover the colonial charm of the southeast and one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

As an example, he said the prices for those two packages are MXN 14,512 (USD 706) and MXN 8,916.00 respectively, which he added, are cheaper than the market prices. The packages would be available on the websites of Tren Maya and also of the Mexican government and Visit Mexico, besides select tour operators.

Earlier, on December 15, President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the remaining two Tren Maya circuits in the state’s capital city of Chetumal. With these, all seven routes on Tren Maya train are now open.
