Spain, the second most visited country in the world, became the top third nation to receive the most visa requests at nearly 1.4 million Schengen visa applications in 2023. Moroccans filed the most applications while India rounded up top 5.

Spain received a total of 1.4 million Schengen visa applications in 2023, making it the third country with most visa requests received for the year, just behind France and Germany.

According to Schengen Statistics, visa applicants to Spain have remained relatively the same as in the previous year, out of 1.4 million visa requests, Spain approved over 1 million of them and rejected 51,281. The approval rate for visas to Spain in 2023 was 77.4 pc compared to 17.7 pc rejection rates.

Morocco leads the list of 10 top visa applicants

With 189,000 visa applications filed, Moroccans represent the largest nationality group in Spain for 2023. This nationality group had filed the highest number of visa requests in 2022 as well. 

However, application rates in 2023 have dropped by 6.1 pc. 

This is followed by China in the second, which has marked a comeback in post-pandemic times at 148,533 applications. 

The statement adds that Algeria and Russia rank third and fourth with 127,534 and 116,384 applications respectively.

India rounds up the top five with 91,863 applications to the Schengen country, the statement adds.
