Russia seeks 50 pc growth in tourism revenues by 2030

According to Russian tourism industry, the government is set to launch a national tourism promotional project in 2025 to attract more tourists

As the Russian government seeks to promote tourism and to grow the contribution of tourism to national GDP by over 50 pc by the year 2030, international tourist arrivals in the country in the first nine months of 2024 tripled to 1.3 million.

Enthused by a rapid rise in its international tourist arrivals in 2024, Russia is targetting a multi-fold increase in the contribution of the tourism industry to the national economy.

According to Russian tourism industry, the government is set to launch a national tourism promotional project in 2025 to attract more tourists and to increase the contribution of tourism to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the current RUB 6.97 trillion (USD 67.7 billion) to over RUB 10 trillion by 2030.

Over 13 million foreign citizens, including almost 1.3 million tourists, visited Russia in January-September 2024, the Federal Security Service (FSB)’s Border Service said in a statistical report.

According to FSB, almost 11 pc more foreigners visited Russia in the first nine months of this year, compared to the respective period of last year which stood at 11.75 million. In contrast, the number of visitors who came to Russia for tourism practically tripled year-on-year, says FSB.

According to the data provided by FSB, while in overall international visitor numbers, Uzbekistan topped with 2.65 million arrivals in the first nine months of the year, in terms of visitors for tourism, China led with close to 732,000 tourists from January to September.

FSB says that in overall visitor numbers, Uzbekistan was followed by Kazakhstan with 2.63 million arrivals and Tajikistan ranked third with 1.4 million arrivals. Following them were China with 1.37 million, Kyrgyzstan with 889,600, Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia, with 539,750, Azerbaijan with 401,800, Belarus with 396,600 visitors and Mongolia accounted for 281,100 arrivals.

FSB notes that the the number of Chinese tourist arrivals in the country for the first nine months grew almost 7-fold from last year. China was followed by Germany which ranked second with 52,400 tourist arrivals, a growth of 24.4 pc versus last year and Iran ranked third with 45,500 tourists, or 77 pc more than last year. Other top five are Turkmenistan which saw tourist numbers almost double to 45,600, and Turkiye which saw 31 pc growth to 44,150 tourists.

FSB says that in terms of tourist arrivals in the January-September 2024 period, other countries in the top 10 are the United Arab Emirates with 43,300 arrivals, Saudi Arabia with 39,100, Kazakhstan with 19,000, India with 17,700 tourists and Estonia with 13,700 tourists.

Russia is keen to promote MICE tourism from India and has taken several measures to ease the arrivals from India through the launch of an e-visa for Indian nationals

Russia is also keen to expand the air connectivity between the two countries and is hoping that more Indian carriers will start flying to different cities across Russia.
