With an aim to bring sustainable tourism at the heart of the conversation, Africa Travel Week (ATW) is inviting tourism professionals to participate in the Responsible Tourism Conference, which will take place from April 9-10 at the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC) during WTM Africa 2025.

In a press statement, this two-day event aims to drive critical conversations around sustainability and celebrate sustainable tourism excellence across the African continent.

It adds that the conference will address a range of topics aimed at providing actionable strategies for promoting responsible tourism across Africa, such as Why Responsible Tourism Makes Business Sense, where Harvard economist Michael Porter will explore how sustainability can drive profitability and long-term business success.

Additionally, academic and entrepreneur Theuns Vivian will examine ATW host city, Cape Town’s contributions to sustainable tourism and discuss the latest trends in the region under the session Responsible Tourism: The Cape Town Experience, followed by an interview with Michael Lutzeyer, where he will discuss how Grootbos, a ecotourism resort in South Africa, evolved from a family retreat into a globally recognised leader in conservation.

“There is something for everyone this year. These sessions offer practical insights to help,” says Olivia Gradidge, Marketing Manager, WTM Africa, ILTM Africa.

As per press statement, SATSA and Fair Trade Tourism will also share insights on how they are equipping their members with the tools, which are necessary to thrive in a sustainable tourism environment.

“This dedicated two-day programme serves as a key value-add for show attendees, driving critical conversations and celebrating sustainable tourism excellence across Africa,” adds Gradidge.

Further, the press statement also says that alongside the conference, WTM Africa 2025 will also celebrate the achievements of businesses leading the way in sustainability through the Responsible Tourism Awards, set to be presented on April 11. These awards recognise organisations, initiatives and individuals that have set the benchmark in sustainable practices.

“The Responsible Tourism Awards celebrate those leading by example and raising the bar in terms of sustainable tourism,” further adds Gradidge.

According to the press statement, these awards are free to enter and feature six curated categories, with an expert panel selecting the winners. The gold award winners will compete in the Global Responsible Tourism Awards, joining finalists from India and Latin America.

Meanwhile as per press statement, WTM Africa’s commitment to responsible tourism reflects the increasing global focus on sustainability within the travel industry. By offering a platform for discussion, collaboration, and recognition, the event aims to empower African tourism businesses to adopt sustainable practices that contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for the continent.

“Sustainability is a guiding principle in how we plan and execute every detail of WTM Africa. We are rethinking the way trade shows operate in Africa, from partnering with eco-conscious venues like the CTICC to implementing cutting-edge waste reduction strategies. But our commitment goes beyond the event itself. WTM Africa is a catalyst for change, empowering the tourism industry to adopt sustainable practices that are both environmentally responsible and commercially viable,” says Carol Weaving, Managing Director, RX Africa.
