The Dhofar region of Oman is witnessing a significant surge in tourism, with visitor numbers exceeding 1 million during the ongoing Khareef season, marking a 9 pc increase compared to last year.
According to a press statement by Oman Tourism Board, this influx is driven by Dhofar’s breathtaking landscapes and the cooler weather that attracts tourists from Oman, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and beyond.
It says that adding to this momentum, Dhofar is preparing to host the prestigious World Theatre Festival in October.
The statement adds that this event is expected to elevate Dhofar’s cultural prominence, making it the largest theatre festival in the Arab world and the fifth-largest globally.
Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, emphasised the significance of the festival in promoting cultural exchange and positioning Dhofar as a cultural hub on the global stage.
This follows the success of the Dhofar International Film Festival, which recently showcased 200 films from 18 countries.
Tourism from Saudi Arabia is also set to rise, thanks to the Marhaba Dhofar initiative, which aims to strengthen tourism ties between Dhofar and Saudi Arabia.
The board says that this initiative, organised by Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, is expected to attract a wave of Saudi tourists, further boosting Dhofar’s appeal as a premier travel destination.
According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), Dhofar received over 1 million visitors by the end of August 2024. Omani nationals made up the majority, while visitors from GCC nations, especially Saudi Arabia, contributed significantly to the rise in tourism.
The statement adds that Dhofar’s growing appeal is not only boosting Oman’s tourism sector but also positioning it as a key player in the global cultural tourism market.
The board says that with a blend of natural beauty and rich cultural offerings, Dhofar is on track to becoming a must-visit destination for international travellers seeking both leisure and cultural experiences.
The statement adds that the combination of Dhofar’s scenic landscapes and cultural festivals like the World Theatre Festival is expected to resonate globally, particularly among tourists who seek destinations offering both natural and cultural richness. This cultural and tourism boom is a significant step toward Oman’s long-term vision for the travel sector, aligning with its efforts to diversify its economy and promote sustainable tourism.
