London, Bangkok & Tokyo 2024’s top destinations: ForwardKeys

As the year draws to a close, a report by travel analytics firm ForwardKeys says that London was the top global favourite of the year ahead of Bangkok and Tokyo, while Beijing is leading the recovery in Asia Pacific region.

With a global share of 3 pc and a year-on-year growth of 9 pc, London maintained its position as the world’s favourite destination, says a report by ForwardKeys, a travel data analytics company.

In its year-ending wrap up for 2024, ForwardKeys says that with a growth of 30 pc and 36 pc respectively, Bangkok and Tokyo emerged as strong contenders, reflecting their growing popularity with travellers through 2024. Bangkok ends the year with 2.4 pc market share and Tokyo with 2.1 pc, indicating the gap that the two Asian capitals still have with the British capital.

Paris with 2.1 pc and Dubai with 1.9 pc market shares round off the top five destinations in the world, says ForwardKeys. The French capital registered a surprisingly modest growth of 4 pc despite hosting the 2024 Olympic Games. Singapore grew 20 pc to take a 1.4 pc share and take the 10th slot, while Barcelona clocked 16 pc growth to be 6th on the global list, followed by Rome which grew by 15 pc in the year.

Mexican beach resort town Cancun was 8th followed by New York which registered a 9 pc growth in 2024, says ForwardKeys.

Beijing tops APAC revival, Shanghai for business

In the Asia Pacific region, according to the report, destinations showed strong post-pandemic recovery through 2024, with Beijing and Guangzhou, both in China, standing out as top performers. While Beijing grew 112 pc in the year, Guangzhou registered a growth of 87 pc, followed by Nha Trang in Vietnam that grew by 80 pc. Shanghai with 77 pc and Hong Kong with 44 pc growth rates were the other two in the top five APAC destinations with highest growth rates in 2024.

In terms of business travel, the global leader was Shanghai, a major business hub in China, which grew by 63 pc, demonstrating its unmatched appeal for corporate travellers. Elsewhere in Asia, Kuala Lumpur with 28 pc, Bangkok with 23 pc and Tokyo with 21 pc growth emerged as key destinations for doing business through 2024.

Seoul and Singapore with 19 pc and 16 pc growth rates ensured that all top six slots for global business destinations remained in Asia, with Swedish capital Stockholm, at 7th spot and San Francisco, at the 10th, being the only non-Asians on the list of top 10 business destinations in the year. Riyadh and Hong Kong were eighth and ninth on the list, says ForwardKeys.
