Democratic Republic of the Congo, in central Africa, will organise the first World Music and Tourism Festival in capital Kinshasa, from July 16-18, aiming to promote music as a powerful driving force for travel and cultural exchange, attracting visitors from all over the world in search of authentic and immersive experiences. The festival is being organised in partnership with UN Tourism.

In a press statement, UN Tourism says that the festival represents an opportunity to promote the “DRC” destination and to highlight the deep link between music and tourism, notably through Congolese Rumba, which became an emblematic element of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in December 2021.

The statement adds that the event will showcase rhythmic and immersive performances from around the world, related to four musical expressions including traditional, urban, folk and rumba. It will also host roundtable discussions on subjects like music as a unifying art form, issues related to copyright and intellectual property, the dynamisation of destinations, the digital revolution, and the role of youth in innovation and the promotion of musical heritage.

According to the statement, online registration for the festival is available until June 27.
