Kenya to enhance international profile as tourism destination

The Kenyan government has outlined its strategy for promoting the country as a tourism destination, with a focus on cruise tourism as well as source markets in the United States and China.

In key decisions aimed at boosting the international tourist arrivals in the country, the Kenyan government has outlined a new strategy with a focus on cruise tourism as well as launch of international promotional campaigns.

According to a press statement by the Kenyan government, the decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting where a set of new initiatives were approved. These aim at enhancing the tourism sector, focusing on improving competitiveness, sustainability, and attracting more international visitors, says the statement.

According to the Kenyan government, as cruise tourism in the country increased by 163.5 pc in 2024, it now plans significant investments in upgrading and expanding port facilities.

In addition, the country will launch new promotional campaigns to enhance international profile of Kenya, particularly in the United States and China, as both these markets that have performed very well.

The statement adds that the US remained Kenya’s largest source tourism market, with 306,501 visitors, amounting to 12.8 pc of total arrivals. China has also shown potential in the tourism industry, with over 54,000 arrivals reported by mid-October last year, says the government.

Going forward the Kenyan government has decided to focus on eco-tourism and expanding community-based tourism. “The government is committed to fostering sustainable tourism that benefits both the environment and local communities. With an expected three million tourists in 2025, we are focusing on eco-friendly practices, better marketing, and expanding our MICE and cruise tourism infrastructure,” reads the statement.

The government noted that in 2024, international arrivals to Kenya rose by 14.6 pc, reaching 2.4 million, generating KES 452.2 billion (USD 3 billion) in revenue, reflecting a growth of 15 pc over the preceding year.
