As the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), the largest and oldest association of tour operators in India, prepares to hold elections for its leadership team for the 2024–26 term, Jyoti Mayal, current TAAI President and Director, New Airways Travels, has thrown her hat in the ring again, with a strong bid to retain her position as the leader of TAAI.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, Mayal stressed on her current work as the President and outlined her key achievements, which she says she intends to amplify if she is re-elected in the elections that are slated to be held on September 30.

“TAAI has worked a lot in these last five years. What we have achieved I openly say that no one else has achieved and my achievements stand out by themselves because my first USP is that I am where the powerhouse is, Delhi. That is where all decisions are taken, be it the airlines, the diplomatic missions or the government. And we worked very closely in the last five years with the government to achieve a lot of things,” Mayal tells India Outbound.

“Starting from the refund of airline tickets during the pandemic to the starting of nations opening of borders and on to the skilling of people, to the education, to the roadshows, I think everything actually boils down to Delhi being the capital of India and taking TAAI to not only national but an international level,” she adds.

Mayal says during her tenure, TAAI conducted the training and upskilling of over 700 women travel agents across India. Programmes such as TAAI’s Paathshala that fostered employment and leadership opportunities for women in tourism.

She says she has also collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism on comprehensive policies, including updating the website and working on Market Development Assistance (MDA) programmes.

Mayal adds that she strongly advocates for the postponement of implementation of TCS (tax collected at the source), fair commissions on visa fees, insurance for low-cost airlines and securing credit input on Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) and rationalising GST rates.

“After every two years, there is a downside that one of the low-cost airlines or another airline falls and all of money goes down, which I am working very closely to see how we can protect that money, bringing insurance. Second issue which I am working for is that the outbound travel is being affected a lot. And I always say that inbound and outbound tourism have to be balanced, because if the flights go full only one way, the airlines will go away. So I am going to continue working on TCS and I am very sure that with my reach, connect and the support that I am getting from the government, we will be able to see that TCS is somehow resolved,” she adds.

Adding that she was already working with the government on skilling and creating more jobs in the tourism sector, Mayal says that she aims to create transparency and fair cancellation and ADM policies from airlines, along with necessary amendments to Memorandum of Association (MoA) as well as protect smaller agents and increase women participation and empowerment.

“We need to bring many more businesses, many more ways of making more money and make every independent small agent stand up by themselves and say we are also TAAI members. Because I think tourism is a very important aspect of the country in how the world grows and how we are going to become the third largest economy with the help of tourism,” Mayal says.

Facing Mayal in the elections are Sunil Kumar, Co-Founder and Commercial Head at AirRetailer and former TAAI President, as well as Harmandeep Singh Anand, Managing Director, Jagsons Travels.
