Izukyū Corporation, a private railway company in Japan along the Izu Peninsula, south of Tokyo in Japan, has collaborated with the operator of the Taipei Metro in Taiwan to bring in overseas visitors, as well as promote tourist spots and local culinary delights along the railway line in Japan.
According to news reports, Izu Peninsula, that has traditionally been popular among European and American tourists, has witnessed a surge in visitors from Asian countries.
The reports attribute the surge to a ‘friendship agreement’ between Izukyū Corporation and Taipei Rapid Transit, calling it a strategic move to draw more Asian tourists.
Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture is famed for its beaches like Atami, Ito and Shimoda, onsen thermal springs and marine sports. Smaller towns like Minami-Ziu and Nishi-Izu are also growing in popularity.
The region, that is primarily frequented by local Japanese tourists, is now trying to cater to international travellers with unique rail excursions.
Izukyū Corporation has introduced a special ticket priced at JPY 3,980 (USD 27) which covers unlimited travel for a day and includes a dining voucher redeemable at select eateries renowned for their fresh seafood.
The statement adds that the rail company is also promoting local produce and has launched the Wizu Olive brand recently, which includes local products like olive oil, various food items and even cosmetics. These products are available at station shops and are also featured in local hotels and restaurants.
It also recently inaugurated a visitor centre to offer amenities like workspaces, luggage storage, and a souvenir shop, enhancing the overall passenger experience.
