Israel has announced the implementation of an Electronic Travel Authorisation system (ETA-IL) to ease travel to Israel from visa-exempt countries.
In a press statement, Israel Tourism says that the ETA represents a major step forward in enhancing the travel experience, adding that the modernised system provides a convenient and efficient way to obtain entry permits, ensuring a smooth journey to Israel.
The statement adds that similar programmes have been adopted in recent years in Europe, the United States, Australia and New Zealand to streamline entry processes and strengthen security measures. The ETA-IL system allows travellers from visa-exempt countries to obtain prior authorisation to enter Israel. Instead of paper-based applications, travellers can now submit their requests online, says Israel Tourism.
According to the statement, the system underwent a pilot phase this past summer for travellers from the United States and Germany. It will officially launch on January 1, 2025.
To apply for an ETA-IL, travellers must complete an online form with basic personal information, passport details, and their planned travel itinerary, and pay a nominal fee of NIS 25 NIS, about USD 7. Once submitted, the application undergoes a quick and thorough review by Israeli authorities, typically resulting in rapid approval via email. It is essential, however, to submit the application at least 72 hours before travel to allow sufficient processing time, says the tourism promotion organisation.
Upon approval, the ETA-IL is linked to the traveller’s passport and remains valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It says that the authorisation holders can enter Israel multiple times, up to 90 days per year. This digital authorisation enables seamless entry into Israel through designated checkpoints, featuring contactless machines that allow travellers to bypass immigration officers, like the Global Entry programme.
The statement adds that the launch of the ETA-IL system not only simplifies the entry process but also enhances security by providing passenger information in advance of their arrival. This proactive approach enables Israeli authorities to efficiently screen and monitor incoming visitors, ensuring the safety and security of both residents and travellers alike.
