On June 23, Stockholm’s City Hall turns 100 years. According to a press statement, the momentous occasion will be celebrated by filling the entire City Hall with love. The statement adds that to make the moment special and unforgettable for everyone, the city authorities have planned an unforgettable day when newlyweds flow through Stockholm’s finest ballrooms, immortalising their wedding in the Golden Hall and toasting with loved ones in the Blue Hall.

The statement adds that when the City Hall was inaugurated in 1923, the celebration lasted a whole week with festivities of various kinds. The inauguration day itself, the highlight of the celebration was Midsummer´s Eve on June 23rd 1923.

Stockholm City Hall says that while on a normal Saturday, about 70 couples get married at the City Hall, but on the 100th anniversary, it expects that 200 couples will celebrate with bookings through to 9pm in the evening.

‘‘I hope and believe that we will see many couples getting married during the 100th anniversary of the Hôtel de Ville. New Year’s Eve is also a very good day to get married, surrounded by loved ones. They now have the chance to live a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the most beautiful building in the city,’’ says Anna König Jerlmyr, Citizens’ Councilor for Finance in the City of Stockholm.

When the Town Hall was inaugurated in 1923, the high point of the celebration, was Saint John’s Day, which fell on the inauguration day itself. The statement adds that there could be little else more appropriate than celebrating the anniversary with love on St John’s Day, a day full of symbolism, emotions and hope for the future.

The statement adds that the City Hall is set to welcome everyone who is planning to get married for a unique wedding in Stockholmers’ own home. Interested couples can make the booking for the wedding time slot on the website of the Stockholm Hotel de Ville, or City Hall.

The statement adds that Ragnar Östberg created Stockholm City Hall, this architectural masterpiece, together with the greatest artists and craftsmen of the day when Sweden’s modern democracy was born. Over the years, City Hall has become synonymous with joy, sadness, celebration and seriousness. Therefore, the 100th anniversary is a given opportunity to draw attention both to City Hall itself and to the many different stories and connections to the building that exist – connections to democracy, architecture, art, time, love and all the little stories in between. Here, things happen in our present that create the conditions for our future.

The statement adds that the celebration of the centenary will continue throughout 2023 and a global anniversary programme will be presented in the fall.
