Will focus on practical projects rather than speculative targets" Gloria Guevara
Ahead of the UN Tourism election, Gloria Guevara, candidate for Secretary-General, has pledged to host a Global Investment Summit within six months of assuming office in January 2026, if elected by Tourism Ministers at the Executive Council session.
In a press statement, Guevara says that campaign statement outlines her proposal to position the summit as a platform for linking public sector tourism leadership with private sector investment.
“I will host a multi-day Global Investment Summit, within six months of taking office as UN Tourism Secretary-General, which will discuss the opportunities and deliver on the enormous appetite which already exists for strategic investment across Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and The Americas,” says Gloria Guevara, a candidate for Secretary-General, UN Tourism.
She adds that the event, which aims to generate immediate collaboration, will focus on practical projects rather than speculative targets.

“The private sector has billions of dollars to invest in innovative new projects in tourism worldwide, whether they be hotels, experiences, attractions and other sustainable initiatives. Unlike other candidates, I believe that there is nothing to be gained in picking numbers which have no basis in reality, simply to gain headlines. What I will do is bring together ministers with leaders in the private sector to unlock the opportunities which exist now, realistic, exciting and transformative projects. I will connect innovative Ministers with innovative business leaders to create legacy projects,” adds Guevara.

She says that she has worked in both government and private sector roles for over 35 years, including as Secretary of Tourism of Mexico and as former head of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Her campaign is focussed on four key areas, sustainability, innovation, opportunities and resilience. As a result, more than 200 tourism leaders are reported to be supporting her candidacy.
The election for the post of Secretary General will take place at the end of May.
“UN Tourism has a unique role to play as a unifying platform for co-operation. I am committed to strengthening that role and bringing a collaborative, solutions-driven approach to the organisation, especially involving Artificial Intelligence (AI), new skills and learning, and responsible development,” adds Guevara.
