The European exhibition market saw a significant recovery in 2023, according to data released by UFI, the global association of the exhibition industry.

The 2023 Euro Fair Statistics report covers 2,008 exhibitions across 17 European countries, including Greece for the first time, and indicates a strong resurgence in face-to-face events following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report, based on certified data from 12 industry bodies, reveals that these exhibitions collectively hosted 567,758 exhibiting companies and spanned 21.3 million sqm of rented space.

UFI report says that the events attracted nearly 50 million registered visitors, demonstrating renewed confidence in large-scale, in-person gatherings.

It says that notably, less than 2 pc of the events incorporated a hybrid format, underscoring the return to traditional physical exhibitions.

“This year’s report highlights the significant bounce back of exhibitions after the pandemic. It is also telling that hybrid events, which blend online and in-person attendance, remain rare in this sector,” says Kai Hattendorf, CEO, UFI.

The data accounts for approximately 45 pc of the European exhibition market, including 162 events that earned the prestigious ‘UFI Approved Event’ designation.

The report breaks down the audience demographics where 40 pc of exhibitions targetted trade visitors, 29 pc attracted the public and 31 pc catered to both groups.

UFI says that participating industry organisations include bodies from countries like Italy, Spain, Germany and Greece.

The comprehensive nature of the report emphasises the essential role exhibitions play in fostering business growth, networking, and innovation across Europe.

It says that as in-person events make a strong comeback, the European exhibition industry looks set to maintain its status as a vital contributor to the continent’s economic recovery.
