How important is tourism from India to Zimbabwe?

India’s outbound tourism is important to Zimbabwe as it contributes to economic growth and development through economic diplomacy. Increased tourism from India can drive investment in infrastructure. Zimbabwe has an opportunity to diversify its tourist market and create opportunities for Indian tourists to experience the rich culture, natural beauty and history of Zimbabwe.

Which are the key tourist attractions for Indian visitors to Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe’s tourism product is deeply rooted in the country’s natural resources. Stunning natural beauty, pristine wildlife and unspoiled landscapes are the key attractions which offer authentic tourism experiences lasting a lifetime. Zimbabwe is home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites which include one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Victoria Falls and the Great Zimbabwe Monument from where the country gets its name. This 15th century stone sculpture is the second highest south of the Sahara and a testament to the country’s rich history and heritage. Other attractions include Mana Pools National Park, Khami Ruins and Matobo Hills. Our country offers a unique blend of thrilling adventures, rich cultural heritage and unforgettable safari experiences, making it the perfect fit for India’s passion for exploration and discovery.

How has the Indian market performed in the past few years?

Since Zimbabwe reclassified India from Category C to Category B market, with visa on arrival, we have witnessed a notable increase in visitor arrivals, demonstrating the potential of this market. While the Covid-19 pandemic caused a decline in tourism worldwide, including in Zimbabwe, we have seen a promising resurgence in numbers post pandemic. We anticipate a sustained upward trend in Indian tourist arrivals.

How do you intend to develop this market and what is the potential of the Indian market for Zimbabwe?

Recognising the significance of the Indian market, we have strategically appointed a Tourism Attaché for Zimbabwe at the Embassy focused on developing and promoting the Indian market. Zimbabwe is well known in India as a cricket-loving nation, but there is more to Zimbabwe beyond wickets and runs. We want to enhance the ‘Visit Zimbabwe’ brand by highlighting its unique selling points through targetted events and campaigns in India.

We seek collaboration with Indian tour operators and travel agencies to include Zimbabwe in their outbound packages to Africa. We want to promote cultural exchange programmes through art, music and education exchanges to showcase our rich cultural diversity.

How easy is it to obtain a Zimbabwean visa for an Indian visitor?

Zimbabwe welcomes you with open arms and a hassle-free visa process. Simply book your flight, arrive at our port of entry and reach Zimbabwe! You receive your visa on arrival for a nominal fee of just USD 30 single entry or USD 45 for a double entry.

To what extent does lack of direct connectivity hamper travel from India to Zimbabwe?

While the lack of direct flights may present a slight inconvenience, it is a small hurdle compared to the incredible experiences awaiting in Zimbabwe. We are working tirelessly to enhance connectivity as the establishment of direct flights between Zimbabwe and India will facilitate travel and trade, but in the meantime with airlines like Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways and Emirates already flying directly to Zimbabwe, the connections are seamless and convenient.

How do you plan to engage with the Indian market?

We are excited to connect with the Indian market. We are hosting our annual travel show in Zimbabwe, ‘Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo’ from September 12 to 14 and we have extended a special invitation to the Indian travel trade to join us for a familiarisation tour and experience Zimbabwe first-hand, connect with the local destination management companies and build networks. Our strategy also includes sports tourism, media outreach, social media marketing, influencer collaborations, familiarisation tours, road shows and events, travel and trade shows and tourism packages formulation amongst others. Increasing our brand awareness and visibility will ultimately drive sales and conversions.
