What is the purpose of this visit to India?
We are attending the 10th India-Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Business Conference which lays the foundation for a highly important collaboration between India and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. And our principle proposal is to continue the negotiation for a free trade agreement between India and Peru.
And this is an excellent opportunity to grow the bilateral commerce. I am confident that many Indian business leaders will leave the conclave with a better understanding of Peru as a stable and transparent partner for foreign trade operations. Moreover, events like this facilitate crucial engagement between government authorities from India and those from Latin America and the Caribbean region. We need to promote tourism to Peru because when people travel to Peru for trade, they can also visit different places of Peru.
How many visitors do you expect from India in 2025?
Last year, we had 10,000 visitors from India to Peru, higher than in 2023. This year, we expect to receive 20,000 visitors from India.
How well-prepared is Peru to receive Indian visitors?
Peru is well prepared to meet the expectations of Indian visitors with a robust tourism infrastructure, particularly along the southern circuit, which includes destinations like Cusco, Machu Picchu or Arequipa in and Puno with the Titicaca Lake. This region offers high-end hotel chains, personalised services and tailored experience in guided tours and gastronomy.
Indian visitors usually plan their trips three to six months in advance and stay between 10-15 days, combining Peru with destinations, such as Argentina and Brazil.
And gastronomy is a key factor, as many Indian travellers are vegetarian for religious reasons and require hotels to adapt to their dietary needs. It is important for us to prepare Peru for foreign visitors.
Which segment of travellers are you looking at?
We are looking to promote Peru as a luxury tourism destination in the Indian market and we are implementing a strategy focussed on working with the travel trade and participating in specialist events. We have been present in events like Luxury Tribe India and OTM 2024 & 2025 where 16 Peruvian companies participated with about 690 business meetings and over 2,050 strategic contacts. There was significant interest from buyers in luxury experience in Peru. This is our focus because Peru is prepared for all types of tourism, but, we are focussing on luxury tourism.
How do you plan to improve connectivity between India and Peru?
We are having a conversation with airlines for flights from Asia to Peru, but not specifically to India. Later this year, Turkish Airlines plans to launch flights from India to Istanbul and onward to Lima. Similarly, we need to talk with other airlines.
How are you planning to promote Peru in India?
For 2025, Peruvian Tourism Board has developed a comprehensive strategy that targets both the trade and the consumer.
Additionally, we are planning an advertising campaign for the Indian market, which will include creation and distribution of specialist content across digital and traditional media. We also aim to work with a dedicated social media manager, with localised content to attract Indian visitors.
We are also focussing on training travel agents through an online learning platform to provide detailed information about Peru as a destination, with tools such as photos, videos and brochures to facilitate promotion and drive sales.
When are you planning to launch training programme?
It is already running right now and more than 1,000 travel agents have already enrolled.
