Malayasia Airlines launches upcycled fashion bags

As part of its drive towards sustainability, parent of Malayasia Airlines, the Malaysia Aviation Group has launched a range of handbags from repurposed aircraft materials such as seats and life vests. In a press communique, the MAG says it has partnered with fashion brand Theselina to produce a range of five handbags, which have been named after IATA codes for destinations within the carrier’s network. Amongst the materials that have been recycled for making the bags are seat belts, buckles, tablecloths and life vests, as well as the airline’s cabin crew uniforms. The bags that can be purchased from its website, myjournify.com, have been named after IATA codes for destinations serviced by MAS. These include Sierra Yankee Delta (SYD) Personalised Canvas Bag, November Romeo Tango (NRT) Messenger Bag and Mike Yankee Yankee (MYY) Penan Bag. Acting chief sustainability officer of MAG and CEO of Firefly, Philip See says the initiative “underpins MAG’s commitment for a net-zero carbon emission future through upcycling efforts” and follows the launch of its Sustainability Blueprint last year. “Sustainability is one of the key drivers in MAG’s Long-Term Business Plan 2.0 of becoming Asia’s Leading Travel and Aviation Services Group.

“We are proud to show the fruits of what our collaboration with high-end designer Selina Yeop Jr of Theselina has brought, through the repurposing of aircraft materials into bespoke designer bags, allowing us to reduce wastage whilst alleviating our flagbearing brand to the world,” he adds.
