US tops overseas tourism spend in 2021: Global Data

A recent survey by GlobalData, a data aggregator, says that the average expenditure incurred by a United States’ tourist reached USD 3580 in 2021, the highest in the world. GlobalData says that the willingness of the US market to dedicate significant amounts of its disposable income to international trips could help to drive the recovery of many destinations across the globe. The report, Premiumization in Travel & Tourism (2022) reveals that within the top 10 outbound destinations for the US market in 2021, six would be classed as long-haul destinations, due to the average flight time being more than six hours. The heightened demand for long haul destinations is driven by the substantial levels of disposable income that many US travellers have. It also helps that the US has more millionaires than any other nation. In 2021, the number of US citizens that were worth USD 1 million to USD 1.5 million is projected to be 237.4 pc more than China which has the second highest.

“The average length of stay for an international trip from the US market was 18 days in 2021, showcasing that Americans will stay in a destination for a lengthy period of time. This point adds to the attractiveness of US travelers for destinations across the globe,” says Ralph Hollister, Travel and Tourism Analyst at GlobalData. The report by GlobalData goes on to say that the total tourist expenditure worldwide is forecast to increase at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 22 pc between 2021 and 2024, with expenditure finally exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 2024. The report says that a driving force behind this recovery will be the American travellers as their dollars will be sent to a range of different continents contributing to economic recovery on an international scale.

IATA data points to continued recovery

International Air Transport Association (IATA) data shows growing momentum in recovery of air travel as restrictions are lifted. IATA reports sharp jump of 11 pc in international tickets sold in recent weeks, in proportion to 2019 sales. In the period around February 8, the number of tickets sold stood at 49 pc of the same period in 2019. The same figure in the period around January 25 was 38 pc. IATA says this is the fastest such increase for any two-week period since the crisis began. The jump in ticket sales comes as more governments announce a relaxation of COVID-19 border restrictions. An IATA survey of travel restrictions for the world’s top 50 air travel markets, accounting for 92 pc of global demand in 2019 as measured by revenue passenger kilometers revealed the growing access available to vaccinated travellers.

It says that 18 markets, comprising about 20 pc of 2019 demand, are open to vaccinated travellers without quarantine or pre-departure testing requirements, while 28 markets are open to vaccinated travelers without quarantine requirements, making for 50 pc of 2019 demand and 37 markets, about 60 pc of 2019 demand, are open to vaccinated travelers under varying conditions. These numbers reflect a spate of relaxations announced around the world, including in Australia, France, the Philippines, the UK, Switzerland, and Sweden among them. “Momentum toward normalizing traffic is growing. Vaccinated travelers have the potential to travel much more extensively with fewer hassles than even a few weeks ago. This is giving growing numbers of travelers the confidence to buy tickets. And that is good news! Now we need to further accelerate the removal of travel restrictions. While recent progress is impressive, the world remains far from 2019 levels of connectivity. Thirteen of the top 50 travel markets still do not provide easy access to all vaccinated travelers. That includes major economies like China, Japan, Russia, Indonesia, and Italy,” says Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.
