Riu Hotels and Resorts, a family holiday business by the Riu family in Mallorca, Spain has taken a major step in its sustainability journey by signing an agreement with Tirme, Mallorca Environmental Technology Park, to guarantee the supply of 100 pc locally generated renewable electricity across all its hotels in the Balearic Islands for 2025, 2026 and 2027.
In a press statement, Riu says that this initiative, part of its proudly committed sustainability strategy, ensures that every unit of electricity consumed at its five hotels in Majorca, the hotel in Formentera and its corporate offices in Playa de Palma will have a zero carbon footprint from this year onwards.
The statement adds that the agreement marks a pioneering move, making it the first hotel chain to secure such a deal with Tirme.
The hotel group adds that this development builds on the hotel’s broader shift toward green energy, which began in 2022 when the company secured certified renewable electricity for its hotels in twelve countries, covering more than half of its global destinations.
According to the statement, the company has also invested in the installation of photovoltaic solar panels in 22 of its hotels, further supporting its goal to minimise environmental impact. Over the past three years, the company has achieved a 64 pc reduction in emissions per stay, demonstrating significant progress in its carbon reduction targets.
Additionally, Riu’s sustainability efforts extend beyond energy, encompassing responsible procurement, waste reduction and the prioritisation of local and certified sustainable products.
