Hotel industry across the world is adding significant number of new hotel rooms as over 1 million rooms are under construction across the world with Asia Pacific accounting for more than half of these.

Shanghai, London and Dubai will add the highest number of new hotel rooms in the current year says a report by CoStar, a hospitality industry tracking firm.

In a press statement, CoStar says that globally, over 1 million hotel rooms are currently under construction, with over 511,000 in Asia-Pacific alone, over 204,000 in the Americas, about 171,000 in Europe and just under 105,000 in Middle East and Africa.

CoStar says that among markets outside of the United States, Shanghai, London and Dubai are projected to open the most hotel rooms in 2025.

It says that in Europe, there are 171,294 rooms in construction, while 86,438 rooms are in final planning and another 163,184 rooms in planning stages.

It adds that Europe shows 106,729 projected room openings in 2025, including those already opened this year. Three major markets in the region are projected to open more than 3,000 rooms for the year. These include London with 5,632 rooms, Istanbul with 3,920 and Dublin with 3,197.

It says that in Asia Pacific, a total of 511,666 rooms are under construction currently, while 47,241 rooms are in final planning and another 396,598 rooms are in planning stages.

The region is at 228,468 projected rooms openings for this year with Shanghai topping with 7,953 rooms, while another Chinese city Chengdu has 4,821 rooms set to open this year and Shenzhen, also in China, will add 3,946 rooms. Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia will add 3,841 rooms, Suzhou in China to have 3,403 new rooms and Bangkok in Thailand to see 3,199 new rooms opening up this year in the region.

According to CoStar, in Middle East and Africa region, a total of 104,572 rooms are under construction currently, while 28,875 rooms are in final planning and another 94,056 rooms are in planning stages.

Mostly focused in the Middle East, the region is at 50,683 projected room openings for 2025, with notable counts in Dubai which will see 5,344 new rooms, followed by Makkah in Saudi Arabia with 4,749 rooms, Qatar with 3,936 rooms, Saudi capital Riyadh with 3,485 rooms and Jeddah, also in Saudi Arabia, to open 3,156 new rooms.

The statement adds that in the Americas, North and South, a total of 204,217 rooms are under construction currently, while 301,645 rooms are in final planning and another 407,254 rooms are in planning stages.

CoStar adds that the region is projected for 138,909 room openings in 2025. Excluding the US, which is led by New York City and Nashville in projected room openings, other leaders include the Dominican Republic with 3,543 new rooms and Toronto in Canada with 1,460 rooms.
