Joali Maldives has announced its annual art week with the April Imagi-Nature Art Festival. According to a press statement by Joali, the Maldives’ first art-immersive resort has collaborated with renowned art consultant Tatiana Gecmen-Waldek for the fest that is to be hosted from April 14-18. The event focuses on exploring the creative spirit of nature and engaging in creative dialogues between international art forms, impressive installations, and local influences at Joali Maldives.

The statement adds that Aurelie Hoegy, Studio Mameluca, Maja Rohwetter, Barbara Veiga, Jeanne Susplugas, Le Petit Chef, and Hajja and Joule are a few of the renowned artists who have collaborated on this project that strives to combine art and sustainability. It says that each immersive work is made to captivate, spark, and unleash the imagination while channelling the natural splendour of the Joali Maldives. Visitors of all ages are welcome to engage with eco-conscious artwork located all across the lovely island. For World Art Day on April 15, there are also scheduled special events, says the resort.

It goes on to say that Joali Maldives will serve as a gallery in itself as the resort will become a Sculpture Park, housing four permanent installations from the lmagi-Nature Art Festival. Hoegy’s fluid art piece, Joali Hammock, inspired by natural movement and transcending boundaries between art and design, Studio Mameluca’s vicennial installation of the Maldives’ One Egg, One World, Jeanne Susplugas’ virtual reality experience, Daydreaming and Rohwetter’s multisensory augmented reality app Contingencies will permanently join the resort’s collection.

Joali adds that as a female-owned and connected retreat, it is also promoting gender equality and the development of talented women. Through the resort’s Women in Arts program, it aims to offer local women a platform and hone their skills. The artworks and local crafts are then displayed in the Joali Art Studio for purchase. The Imagi-Nature Art Festival will put female artists at the front of the curation, with highlights including Veiga, whose live performance of Earth Layers will give visibility to planet conservation, Suspulugas, whose work offers a reflection, not devoid of humour, derision and cynicism, on the ills of society, Rohwetter, whose cross-medial approach blurs the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds and local Maldivian sisters Hajja and Joule, who will be collaborating with Hoegy.

Joali adds that Le Petite Chef’s installation, which will be available for six months in Saoke, will redefine the culinary arts, much to the joy of foodies. The Joali Art Studio and La Maison de Joali store will exhibit scarves designed by Rohwetter as a way for visitors to commemorate this event that inspired their creativity.

The resort adds that it has always been committed to environmental protection and the local population through various initiatives, including the Olive Ridley Project, protecting sea turtles and their habitats through rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research and education. Although each piece of art throughout the retreat is unique, they are all united by a commitment to sustainability.
