24 responsible tourism operators from across Southeast Asia received gold, silver or “one to watch” accolades during ICERT event
At the ICRT Southeast Asia Responsible Tourism Awards, Cardamom Tented Camp, an eco-lodge in Cambodia, won the gold in the ‘Nature Positive’ category. The announcement was made on June 18 during a ceremony at the Lyceum of the Philippines University in Manila.
In a press statement, the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) says that 24 responsible tourism operators from across Southeast Asia received gold, silver or “one to watch” accolades during the event.
It adds that the camp was selected for its contribution to the protection of 18,000 hectares of forest habitat in Botum Sakor National Park through the co-funding of forest patrols. Since its opening in 2017, the initiative has led to a reduction in deforestation and poaching and supported wildlife recovery. The camp also offers visitors opportunities to engage with local wildlife and flora.
The ICRT says that other Southeast Asia-based gold award recipients include Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, Vietnam, under “Adapting to Climate Change”, Anthro on Foot Walking Tours, Philippines, for “Peace, Understanding and Inclusivity”; Worming Up, Malaysia, for “Managing Waste” and Nay Palad Hideaway, Philippines and Sen Caraih Cultural and Ecotourism Village, Vietnam in the “Responsible All-Inclusive” category.
The not-for-profit organisation says that the award process prioritised measurable outcomes, efforts to reduce negative environmental and social impacts, and examples that can be replicated elsewhere. Evaluation also included a review of support for local communities, economies and culture.
The Southeast Asia organisation says that Cardamom Tented Camp was also recognised on the same day at this year’s Travel+Leisure Luxury Awards Asia Pacific, held in Bangkok. The camp was listed among accommodation providers in Cambodia. The camp’s manager Allan Michaud, who has led the project since its launch in 2017, received the award in person. Currently manages the 12-tent ecolodge in Koh Kong province at southwest Cambodia.

“We are grateful to the judges for recognising the commitment of everyone involved at the camp. We strive to deliver a genuine ecotourism experience in a setting we are proud to protect,” says Allan Michaud.
