Snorkelers are sure to spot California spiny lobsters, sheep crabs, and leopard sharks. When finally, weary from the day’s activities, settle down for a twilight beach bonfire.

If you remember the American comedy- drama movie, Beaches (1988) you are sure to find the 5 km of sandy shores dotted with charming 1940s-vintage cottages on this beach to be quite familiar. Located just off busy Pacific Coast Highway, between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach, the Crystal Cove State Park offers surfers and skim-boarders to tackle the reef break while landlubbers enjoy beach walks. Head to the 1.6 km trail tunnels through conifers cloaking the Elk Head bluffs, then pack a picnic and savour views of Pewetole Island, a rock outcrop straight out of children’s picture book.  If one has a few days to spare along with a travel itch, then one should definitely opt to head out on this hidden beach’s road trip.

Manchester State Park Beach, Mendocino County

The dunes at the 111-acre Manchester State Park Beach at Mendocino County, California backs a driftwood-laden swath of sand, ideal for meditative walks and searching for washed-up treasures along the five-mile-long (8 km) shoreline.
