Marking the next phase of its leadership transition, IndiGo, India’s low-cost carrier, has appointed Vikram Singh Mehta as Chairman of the Board. He has been serving as a Board member since May 2022.

In a press statement, Indigo says that this appointment follows the completion of the five-year term of Venkataramani Sumantran, who was appointed as chairman in May 2022 and guided the Board during the company’s recovery and growth in the post-Covid period.

It adds that Vikram Singh Mehta began his professional career with the Indian Administrative Services in 1978. He left government service after two years to pursue roles in the corporate sector. He is currently Chairman of the Centre for Social and Economic Progress and has previously served as Executive Chairman of Brookings India and as a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.

As per the statement, IndiGo says he held the role of Chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in India and was also Chief Executive Officer of Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals in Egypt. He has served on the boards of Colgate-Palmolive, Mahindra & Mahindra and Larsen & Toubro.

According to the statement, the airline adds that he was named “Businessman of the Year” by Asia House in 2010 and was recognised as the “Best Independent Director” in India by the Asia Centre for Corporate Governance and Sustainability in 2016.
