With an estimated forecast of about 6.3 million travellers between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, a 15 pc increase over last year, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the United States is preparing for a bustling holiday season.

In a press statement, SFO says that with passenger volumes steadily climbing, SFO has rolled out a series of new facilities, destinations and services designed to streamline the airport experience and enhance comfort for holiday travellers.

The peak holiday travel period officially begins on Friday, November 22, with approximately 160,000 passengers expected on this day alone, SFO forecasts.

To manage the anticipated surge, SFO says it strongly encourages travellers to plan ahead and arrive well in advance of their departure times, two hours for domestic flights and three for international flights.

The statement adds that SFO’s parking facilities are expected to reach near full capacity and airport officials advise booking parking well in advance using the airport’s online booking system.

This service allows travellers to choose dates, times, and payment options before arriving at the airport, minimising last-minute hassles. SFO also recommends considering public transit or ride-sharing services as parking availability tightens.

To further ease the check-in process, SFO is introducing a remote baggage check-in service available from the Long-Term Parking garage and the Rental Car Centre.

The service allows passengers on domestic flights with select airlines to check their luggage and obtain boarding passes before entering the main terminals.

While the baggage check-in service is complimentary, standard airline baggage fees still apply. Once checked in, passengers can proceed directly to TSA checkpoints, reducing wait times at the terminal itself.

In a significant enhancement to passenger flow, SFO says it has recently completed Harvey Milk Terminal 1, which now links all terminals post-security.

This improvement enables passengers to make smooth connections between flights, regardless of airline.

A temporary corridor has also been opened in Terminal 3, allowing passengers to bypass construction work currently underway as part of the Terminal 3 West Modernisation project.

SFO holiday travellers will benefit from a slate of new airline options and destinations.

Air Premia has launched a route to Seoul, South Korea, Frontier Airlines is offering flights to popular vacation spots in Palm Springs, California, and Vail, Colorado, United Airlines has introduced routes to Monterrey, Mexico, Belize and Costa Rica and Alaska Airlines has also added Costa Rica to its roster of destinations.

These expanded routes come as SFO continues to grow its role as a gateway for both domestic and international travel.

To bring holiday cheer to the bustling terminals, SFO says it will host live music performances throughout the season.

Bay Area musicians will perform in various terminal locations, offering travellers a chance to unwind and enjoy the festive atmosphere as they make their way to their destinations.

The statement adds that with these new facilities, services, and seasonal events in place, SFO is well-prepared to make this holiday travel season smoother and more enjoyable for millions of passengers.
