Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines has signed a new order agreement with Boeing for 200 aircraft to further strengthen its fleet in line with its growth targets. The aircraft deliveries from the new order are scheduled to join the Pegasus fleet starting from 2028. This marks the largest order ever placed in the airline’s history.

In a press statement, Pegasus Airlines says that it is already the airline with the youngest fleet in Türkiye, and one of the youngest in the world, and that it continues to expand its fleet with next-generation aircraft, and has made a significant investment in line with its goal of becoming a leading global player.

It says that following extensive evaluations regarding aircraft requirements for 2028 and the following decade, Pegasus has signed an agreement with the Boeing Company for 200 Boeing 737-10 aircraft.  Under the terms of the agreement, Pegasus has placed a firm order for the first 100 Boeing 737-10 aircraft for delivery from 2028, with 100 additional purchasing options, which can be converted into firm orders in the future. The total value of the contract for 200 Boeing 737-10 aircraft is approximately USD 36 billion, based on Boeing’s publicly announced current list prices, says the airline.

The statement adds that the largest order in Pegasus’ history not only supports the company’s growth objectives, but also serves as an important step towards achieving its 2050 sustainability goals. This aircraft order signed with Boeing is a testament to the strong and significant collaboration already existing between the parties in the aviation sector. This agreement represents an important step towards establishing new partnerships and strengthening existing ones, both domestically and internationally.

“As a leading stakeholder in our country’s tourism sector, which creates net cash inflows and the highest added value for our country, and has shown record-breaking growth after the pandemic; we are working tirelessly to reach new record-highs and do our part for Türkiye to achieve the targeted 100 million visitors and USD 100 billion in revenue in tourism. We continue to invest in our fleet in line with our growth targets in Türkiye and globally, and to expand our network by launching new routes. Currently, with an average age of 4.5 years, we have the youngest fleet in Türkiye and rank among the airlines with the youngest fleets in the world. Within the scope of our agreement with Boeing, we have ordered a total of 200 Boeing 737-10 aircraft. The first 100 aircraft, for which we have placed firm orders, will begin joining our fleet starting in 2028,” says Güliz Öztürk, CEO, Pegasus Airlines.

“We will evaluate converting the remaining 100 aircraft options into firm orders in the coming years, based on market conditions and the needs of our fleet. Boeing aircraft have been an integral part of our operations since Pegasus entered the aviation industry in 1990. We are pleased to be expanding our fleet with the new Boeing 737-10 model aircraft. We are confident that our collaboration will create new opportunities for local manufacturing, technology transfer, R&D, training, and employment in the Turkish aviation industry.  When considered within the scope of Boeing’s National Aerospace Initiative launched with the Turkish government in 2017, our order will also open new doors and create production and export opportunities both for Turkish manufacturers and for the wider aviation industry,” adds Öztürk.

An important step towards efficiency and sustainability

Pegasus says that the Boeing 737-10, the largest single-aisle aircraft in Boeing’s 737 MAX family, offers high efficiency for short- and medium-haul flights. Powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines, the Boeing 737-10 stands out with 20 pc lower fuel consumption compared to previous-generation aircraft. With a seat capacity of up to 230 passengers, the Boeing 737-10 also offers a more comfortable travel experience due to its spacious cabin and large overhead luggage compartments, it adds.

The order is extremely timely for Boeing which has been struggling for almost a decade with serious quality issues that have led to its new aircraft deliveries being delayed by several years.
