With nearly 8 million passengers transiting through London Heathrow in July, the hub of the United Kingdom maintained its gold spot as the busiest airport in Europe for the first half of the year, surpassing Paris Charles de Gaulle in France, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands, Frankfurt Airport in Germany, Madrid Airport in Spain, and others by millions of travellers.

According to a press statement by the operator of Heathrow Airport, it had never surpassed 1.8 million passengers in a week before July. This has now been achieved three weeks in a row from July 8 to 28, as the airport continues to break its own records.

The authorities add that Heathrow saw six of its busiest ever departure days in the week the schools broke up for the summer holiday period from July 22, with over 140,000 direct departing passengers and almost 140,000 bags leaving the airport daily.

The airport says it has operated in close cooperation with its partners, and the recent worldwide IT outage and unlawful protest activity have not had a significant impact on flights, according to the statement.

It adds that Venice in Italy and Larnaca in Cyprus proved popular destinations for those jetting off for some summer sun, as Doha in Qatar and Ireland’s capital Dublin joined Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and JFK in New York in the United States as the latest routes, with one million passengers travelling to and from Heathrow this year.

There were also big boosts for Orlando and many other destinations in the US such as Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and Dallas, says the statement.

While Heathrow continues to attract new routes and record passenger numbers, the latest data following the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorisation shows that Heathrow has lost 90,000 transfer passengers on routes operating to and from the seven countries included in the scheme, since its introduction in 2023.

“Team GB’s performance in Paris (Olympics) has been an inspiration to the nation and to Team Heathrow. In July, we were smashing a passenger record almost every single day and we’re chasing down our never before seen goal of serving 8 million passengers in a single month,” says Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye.

“I am proud that although there were a few potential challenges which could have caused us to stumble, our team remained focused on the prize of making every journey better and delivered a medal-winning start to the summer getaway,” Woldbye adds.
