Israel’s attack on Iran and the subsequent response from Iran has led to the closure of airspaces of multiple nations in the Middle East, including Iran, Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. The closure has disrupted global air travel. Amidst the tensions, Jordan stated that it will reopen its airspace to civilian aircraft Saturday, signalling the Mideast kingdom believes there is no immediate danger of further attacks.
According to Eurocontrol, that monitors European air space, about 1,800 flights to and from Europe had been affected on Friday, including approximately 650 cancelled flights.
Meanwhile, Ben Gurion Airport, in Tel Aviv has been temporarily shut down, while Iranian airspace and parts of Iraq and Jordan were also closed, prompting international carriers to divert ongoing flights and cancel future ones.
Israel’s national carrier, El Al Airlines said it had suspended flights to and from Israel, as did Air France KLM and budget carriers Ryanair and Wizz.
In the past two days, 16 Air India flights were disrupted, with the majority either diverting to other destinations or returning to their origin. Several other major carriers, including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar airways and the German-based Lufthansa, have also cancelled, delayed and redirected flights.
India’s largest carrier, IndiGo has also issued an advisory on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“Due to airspace closure over Iran and nearby regions, some flight routes may be impacted, potentially causing longer travel times or cancellations. Please check your flight status on our website or app before heading to the airport. Our teams are fully prepared and readily available to assist you. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep your journey smooth and safe,” said IndiGo.
According to reports, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines also stated that they are suspending flights between Tel Aviv and the United States. Delta said it has suspended operations between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Tel Aviv through at least Aug 31. Meanwhile, United added that it would pause its flights from Newark Liberty International Airport to Tel Aviv through June 30, and flights from Tel Aviv to Newark are paused through at least July 1.
