Low-cost carrier IndiGo has appointed ex-FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker as Independent Director, leveraging his 30 plus years of aviation expertise to bolster safety and operational strategies amid global expansion plans.

IndiGo, the largest Indian airline, has announced the appointment of Michael Whitaker, former Administrator of the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as an Independent Director on its Board.

In a press statement, IndiGo says that the move, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals, comes as the airline accelerates its international expansion and seeks to reinforce its commitment to operational excellence and safety standards.

The statement adds that Whitaker most recently served as FAA Administrator from October 2023 until his resignation in January 2025. During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing US air safety and managing the national air traffic system, including the agency’s response to major safety challenges at Boeing.

“Mike’s deep and varied industry and government experience will contribute significantly to having an effective and diverse board. His focus on efficiency, operations, and air safety as head of the FAA will reinforce IndiGo’s longstanding focus on operating at the highest levels. Also, his extensive experience in international governmental affairs will be hugely instrumental as IndiGo continues its global expansion,” says Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director, IndiGo.

According to the statement, prior to his role at the FAA, Whitaker held key positions in the aviation industry, including Chief Operating Officer at Supernal, Hyundai’s advanced air mobility division, and Senior Vice President of Alliances, International & Regulatory Affairs at United Airlines.

India is one of the world’s great travel hubs with unlimited growth potential. I look forward to working with the Board to continue the growth of this world-leading Indian company,” says Whitaker.

The statement adds that Whitaker began his career as a lawyer with Trans World Airlines in New York. Whitaker is also a private pilot and holds a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Centre and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Louisville.
